Vignette

Hiding under my bed, the footstep sounds were getting closer, it was climbing up the stairs I think. That footstep was so soft that I had to be completely concentrated to locate which way it was coming from and which way it was heading. I heard it scratching with that grating noise, it sounded like it had something sharp rubbing against a piece of cloth. Then the sound changed, something hard was dragged along the floor and made the finger-nail-scratching-board sound and made me extremely uncomfortable. Most of my vision was blocked by the bed sheet but peeping through the crack between the floor and bedsheets, I could see the shadow of it was moving slowly. Its tail was waving like a snake, and then… it disappeared. The light went off, I was surrounded by the darkness and a sense of weird smell. It was getting even closer! It was weird that a smell of lobsters filled the air around me. My hands were sweaty and I was so scared of that unknown creature. I decided to keep hiding under my bed and see what would happen. Anxiously awaiting it to be gone for half an hour, it did not seem to leave my room. A pair of light green pearls were reflected by the mirror nearby and it was making the ‘pur~pur~’ sound. If it didn’t want to leave, then I would. I crawled out from under the bed in a different corner, slowly standing up and heading to the door. Suddenly it occurred to me, that pair of green pearls, they looked like… Bonny’s eyes! Everything started making sense. Bonny loves the smell of lobsters so much that she decided to carry one piece of it and searching for other cat food all around the house.

reflection on writing as a film maker

While trying to complete this assignment, I felt confused for a moment, since I am never good at observing objects especially from three different perspectives like this. Rather, I prefer observing people because I would receive more reactions than from objects. While completing this assignment, I felt amazed that there are so much details that I have not noticed before, such as the different textures of different clothes and how we choose what we wear everyday.

Approaching this assignment with texts and words definitely helped me notice something that I would simply ignore in the past and try to use words and expressions to write them down, which helped with my descriptive writing. I had to look up words to describe a certain type of texture and the material used in the clothing.

One of the challenges I faced was narrowing down my ideas. My main idea was to show the purpose of clothing and how that has been changing throughout times by observing closet and clothes. But it took me a long time to figure out which cloth specifically that I want to explain in details. Since every clothing in my closet has both the purpose of keeping in warmth and presenting characters, it was hard to choose one of them using medium and close-up shots. The solution I had to overcome this challenge was comparing all my clothes and see which one stands out the most in terms of having the variety of materials. And finally I picked one of my jacket.

I think one of the things I did well was that I included the history of closets since it is important to get a deeper sense of the purpose of clothing. One thing I could have done better is that I could take the medium shot using the same perspective as the long shot instead of changing my perspective to focus on one specific cloth.

Writing Like a Filmmaker

Long shot– A closet:

A typical modern closet, an enclosed space, or a cabinet, that is built into the walls of the house during construction so that it takes up no apparent space in the bedroom when it is closed. This closet in the picture is full of clothes hanged. The purpose is that it is designed for clothing storage. The history of closets started at the end of the Medieval period, homeowners began adding ‘closets’ adjoining their bedrooms. The closet was a place to store treasured possessions, also a place for reading and quiet contemplation. Even today, the word ‘closet’ also has the meaning of secrecy and privacy.

Medium shot–A jacket:

The jacket in the picture is a mid-stomach-length black garment for the upper body. The sleeves are made of faux leather, while the main part is made from linen. Faux leather has the ability to reflect the light and it is shiny while the linen part is matte because of its texture. The purpose of clothing has been changing over times. The wearing of clothing originally is for the protection from the rough environment that can be potentially harmful, or to insulate against cold or hot conditions. Then clothes became a social norm, that for example, the jacket is not necessarily able to keep the warmth but to serve another purpose: to show a certain style of the wearer or to enforce a certain trend or fashion.

Close-up shot–The faux leather:

The leather itself is not as able as the linen to keep the warmth in winter, and it is certainly not a good choice of clothes in summer as well. The faux leather reflects the light and shines. It sometimes can be tight and uncomfortable while still a lot of people are fond of wearing them. The social norm gives the leather jacket the impression of being a little vintage, chic and also a little rough-looking.

Define the Magic

a good song is like a diary

recording your stories

a good song is a hug

when you need warmth

a good song is like a plane ticket

that can take you to anywhere around the world

a good song is the hot meal in winter

when you need it

a good song sings the soul of wind

that you may or may not hear

a good song joins your life

appreciating the same journey you are on

a good song dances

as the same beat as you do

a good song travels with you

through time, through space, through universe

a good song troubles you, confuses you

yet encourages you stimulates your potentials

a good song silences your world
